Absence and Presence is a collection of original prints made by artists from around the world in response to the bombing of Al Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad, Iraq on the 5th March 2007.
“Iraq is the navel of the world” declared the 9th-century historian Yaqubi, “and Baghdad is at its centre”. This website by Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum is a helpful introduction to the historical and cultural vitality of Iraq.
260 artists from many parts of the world have been invited to make a new original print responding to the bombing on the theme of ‘absence and presence’. The gallery shows a taster of some of the work.
A selection of these prints will be exhibited at Exeter Library from 1st February to 30th March 2016.
The rest of the prints, about 120 will be installed at Kaleider for the 4th March and the poetry marathon reading.
The UK Coordinator for Absence & Presence is Exeter based artist and printmaker Catherine Cartwright.
